Clifford Samuel's low, melodious voice sounds like it was made for this atmospheric queer retelling of the Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde story. Gabriel is a 17-year old clerk living in Victorian London who is trying desperately to figure out what happened to his best friend and former lover, Henry Jekyll, who suddenly disappeared after his father discovered their relationship. When an eerily familiar stranger named Hyde arrives in town, Gabriel begins to sense something is terribly wrong. Samuel brings plenty of drama to his performance, heightening the story's tension, and does an expert job with the subtle distinctions between Henry's voice and Hyde's. His excellent narration helps when the plot drags a bit in the middle; fans of historical fantasy will not be disappointed. L.S. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2023]
