Emma Griffiths's genteel, honeyed tones are perfect for Benedict's historical fiction featuring three of the six real-life aristocratic and frequently notorious Mitford sisters. Pre-WWII, Diana and Unity are ardent Fascists, while sister/author Nancy writes anti-Fascist satirical novels. Diana and her husband, founder of the British Union of Fascists, are involved in secret in-person dealings with Hitler; Unity's frenzied adoration of Hitler eventually leads to tragedy. With precise diction, Griffiths presents a flawless assortment of accents and characterizations. She avoids stereotypes, especially when delivering the voices of Hitler and Churchill. She is particularly strong when Nancy discovers Diana's treasonous actions and is torn between love for her sister and her country. THE MITFORD AFFAIR is surprising, entertaining, and informative listening. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2023]
