Historian Alistair Moffat provides brief yet meaty glimpses of events, people, and cultural experiences from a small country that has contributed a vast amount to daily life around the world. Included are scientific discoveries, romantic design elements, and, of course, literary achievements. The contents of this audiobook will engage both fans of Scottish popular culture and those who wonder about the details of the particular subjects covered, including Scotland's unusual geology and aspects of its political history. Sadly, narrator Chris Bland is a poor match for this work. Moffat, who hails from the Scottish borders, does not have the heavy accent Bland provides, and Moffat, who is himself a known media presence to many, is less ponderous in his pacing. A missed opportunity. F.M.R.G. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2023]
