Ana Osorio's narration begins quietly, as does this story of Lola Espinoza. Osorio's lack of expressiveness is apt for the rule-bound, sheltered 17-year-old Mexican American who is sent to Mexico after she, a straight-A student, gets a C in Spanish. Osorio captures Lola's shyness and discomfort, qualities she contrasts with Lola's warm, welcoming Mexican family. Osorio enlivens her narration as Lola's spirits ignite with a first kiss. Then Lola discovers a family curse and is determined to put it to rest with the help of her friend, Javi. Lola's qualities are matched in Javi, as portrayed by Osorio. His gentleness and introspection inspire Lola's growing courage to break free from her comfort zone and family expectations. S.W. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2023]
