This story of loss and second chances is told in alternating chapters, with Machelle Williams narrating present-day events and Janina Edwards narrating past events. Williams portrays Ranita Atwater, a young Black woman who is finishing a four-year prison sentence for drug possession. Her release is forcing her to examine her past, reevaluate her decisions, and stay clean in order to reunite with her children. Edwards delivers scenes of Ranita's past, in particular the trauma she experienced that led to her criminal behavior. Both narrators capture Ranita's fear and sarcasm, along with the softer side she frequently keeps hidden. Listeners will find themselves invested in Ranita's determination to forge a new life.
