Chicago private eye Ashe Cayne does a lot of verbal sparring with cops and his client, news anchor Morgan Shaw. Amir Abdullah's narration puts a lot of heated tension--and a little sarcasm--into those exchanges. When Cayne is hired for bodyguard duty, he winds up investigating a shooting by police officers. Abdullah takes listeners through a couple of quick mental switches with plot surprises. He captures the gossipy tone of the stories Cayne hears about his client. Voicing Cayne's words and thoughts, Abdullah switches between the light tone of Cayne gushing over sushi and the intensity that develops as the detective delves into the mystery. As the investigation progresses, Abdullah captures the moods of both the newsroom and the witnesses. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2023]
