Narrator Daisy Head offers a nuanced delivery of Morton's story about a missing child, an abandoned manor house, and a police detective who is seeking redemption. In June 1933, the Edevane family's youngest child, baby Theo, disappears from their Cornish lakeside estate. Extensive investigations into the family--father Anthony, mother Eleanor, and children Alice, Deborah, and Clemmie--come to naught. Sixty years later, London police officer Sadie Sparrow, languishing in Cornwall on forced administrative leave, stumbles upon the house and begins an investigation of her own. Head's character portraits--including imperious but vulnerable Alice, determined Sadie, and Sadie's kindly grandfather, Bertie--are persuasive. Head's evocative voices and elegant pacing work in tandem, channeling Morton's graceful prose and bringing out the book's aura of forlorn mystery.
