Expect to do a certain amount of relistening to this packed audiobook history of the momentous Greek victory over Persia at Marathon in 490 BCE. Ancient history has its vast deserts and dense forests, its unbridgeable gaps and conflicting versions of events. All of those complicate this epic narrative, which devotes only its closing chapters to describing the famous battle. More attention is given to surveying the long conflict that took place between Europe and Asia, then localized in Greece and Persia. Narrator Mike Cooper is an invaluable asset here, firm, steady, anchoring the listener to the narrative most effectively when it most meanders. Listeners who already know something of this history will relish the depth of detail and expert narration. D.A.W. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2024]
