An exemplary ensemble narrates a dramatic, insightful story. Debut author Harold Rogers's powerful novel is told from the points of view of three generations of a dysfunctional Brazilian family. Lies and betrayal threaten to tear the family apart--several of the characters are not sure of their paternity, for example. On the other hand, the family members' love keeps them tethered to each other. Things come to a head one New Year's Eve at Copacabana Beach. Phrases and sentences in Brazilian Portuguese help to keep the setting at the center of the audiobook. The ensemble successfully conveys the characters' inner turmoil and interpersonal turbulence.
