Peter Noble's British accent sounds appropriately scholarly as he gives voice to the author's attempts to simplify some of the biggest ideas in science. Marcus Chown has set himself a difficult task: to explain in laypersons' terms such phenomena as black holes, relativity, quantum computing, and the Higgs boson, each in about 20 minutes. You can strip out the equations, but these concepts still can't truly be illuminated in such brief plain-language summaries. This is a valiant effort, though: Chown's concise writing and Noble's well-paced, confident narration make the subject matter approachable, if not fully comprehensible. Listeners with at least some background in science will find this audiobook to be an insightful overview of these challenging topics. D.B. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2023]
