British narrator Penelope Rawlins gives her American accents some exercise in voicing FBI Agent Kimberley Reynolds in this Rivers of London urban fantasy series. The Oklahoma native recounts her adventure with a slight twang, which Rawlins smoothes out for the Upper Midwest characters Kimberley encounters in her investigation of strange occurrences in northern Wisconsin. Rawlins sensibly refrains from attempting an accent for Bill Boyd, an Ojibwe meteorologist whose dedication to science makes him a winning foil for the magic-attuned protagonist. Kimberley's no-nonsense competence and the swiftly moving plot will have listeners zipping through this novella. Familiarity with the Rivers of London audiobooks is not required, but listeners new to Aaronovitch's magic procedurals may well find themselves cueing them up afterward for more fast-paced fun.
