FATIMA TATE TAKES THE CAKE

Shayna Small introduces Fatima Tate, a 17-year-old who chafes at the overprotectiveness of her conservative Black Muslim parents. But she also shows devotion to her religion and is passionate about her deepest desire to become a patissiere (baker). Enter Raheem. Small adopts a gravelly voice to portray this wealthy, handsome "Muslim prince." Small's portrayal of Fatima's infatuation makes it believable that physical attraction wins out over the beliefs that have governed her life. Everything changes as Small conveys Raheem's controlling nature and, just as authentically, Fatima's feelings of discomfort, resentment, and entrapment. Finally, she finds the courage to defy Raheem and live her truth. Small also conveys Fatima's joy at baking and closeness to her BFF, as well as the tenderness of her parents' love and support.
