Colin Thubron's ten-thousand-mile auto trip across Russia is a reference work of how things were there a mere five years ago. It's also an inverted mystery because the listener knows the outcome before beginning the journey--an outcome the author never could have imagined. Frank Duncan is a gentle reader who easily wears the mantle of authenticity. He guides the armchair tourist through the vast expanses of diverse territories.
