Kate Forbes provides a no-nonsense narration of Thompson's popular series. Elizabeth Bates is devoted to getting the 19th Amendment passed. The amendment has been approved by 35 states. Only one more is needed, Tennessee. Elizabeth comes from a long line of con artists and can spot corruption when she sees it. She's astounded by how much of it she's seeing as bankers, railroad tycoons, other men, and even women will go to any lengths to prevent all women-- especially Black women--from getting the vote. Forbes doesn't attempt character voices; her pace is slow, and while her diction is precise, her delivery is lackluster. In a story based on such a thrilling event in American history, the narration disappoints. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2023]
