Ruthie Bolton (a pseudonym) is a miracle. Black, poor, illegitimate, abondoned, hideously abused, all she had was guts and brains. With them she finished high school and escaped a spiral of poverty. Pounder is amazing in her portrayal of Ruthie. Pain and disbelief grip the listener as Pounder describes the sexual torture Ruthie considered routine from the man who raised her. Never innocent, Ruthie, as voiced through Pounder, moves from tough to angry to angrier. When Ruthie marries into a fun, loving family, her voice changes to astonishment and then mellows.
