Narrator Helen Laser breathes life into this convoluted murder mystery involving reclusive writer Sebastian Trapp, who is dying; his blended family; the long ago disappearance of his first wife and son; and Nicky Hunter, who is hired to write the dying man's life story. Little does Nicky know that she'll become entangled in Sebastian's story, which overflows with allusions to classic crime works. Laser uses a multitude of accents for the diverse cast of characters: a gravelly voice for the narrative, a bright no-nonsense tone for Nicky, and snarky tones for Sebastian's daughter. The writer's cultured tones mesh with his second wife's soft British accent. As Nicky interviews Sebastian's extended family, she uncovers a host of deeply hidden life-threatening secrets.
