What starts out sounding like chick-lit fluff, soon takes on the gravitas of a tangled, engrossing mystery. Narrator Stephanie Cannon delivers the bright enthusiasm of Rosie, a senior at Yale and a member of the elite equestrian team. When new girl Annelise, a superb rider and a gifted tarot card reader, joins the team, jealousy, bitterness, and classism overtake the genial atmosphere. Cannon uses immediately identifiable voices for each of the riding team members, adding appropriate amounts of snark and snobbery. When one of the team dies in an apparently tragic accident, Cannon's subtle shifts in tone arouse suspicion. After graduation, Rosie's move from Yale to a posh job on Wall Street leads to shocking revelations, which Cannon handles with convincing ease. Worthwhile listening.
