HIDDEN KITCHENS

NPR’s Kitchen Sisters put out the word that they were soliciting personal experiences with, and the locations of, hidden kitchens. Spoken reports of food being cooked and eaten off-the-beaten-path poured in to NPR by the thousands. The microphones became a stethoscope of informal American cuisine--from Colorado River camps to Mexican food stands and the George Foreman grill. The voices, mostly taken from the authors’ answering machine, are those of all-America. Speaking in quick bursts, callers with accents foreign and regional tell of places to go or remember meals they’ve shared.
