Anne Marie Arvdal-Richardson does a first-rate job of narrating this intense portrait of a woman who is in love and in denial. Ester, a poet, is an efficient woman who prides herself on her intellect and intuitiveness. The listener has a front-row seat as Arvdal-Richardson depicts the disintegration of Ester's mind as she experiences her sudden and overwhelming love for Hugo, which involves obsessive, wishful overthinking and unwillingness to see that her love is not reciprocated. Arvdal-Richardson's voice is breathless at times as Ester's endless prevaricating tells the listener what is coming before Ester herself realizes it. This audiobook is for listeners who enjoy a deep dive into the human psyche, with an excellent narrator to guide them. D.G.L. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2024]
