Sarah Cullum commendably portrays 19-year-old Jane Austen as she's traditionally known and as an intrepid amateur sleuth. Listeners attend a ball with Jane, where a body is found. Unfortunately, Jane's handicapped brother finds himself under suspicion because he has the victim's necklace in his possession. Jane is determined to find the murderer. Cullum masterfully delivers the language of the Regency era, the varied characters, and the well-researched facts of Austen's life. Adding to the allure of this mystery are many real characters from the Austen circle and a glimpse of a sweet romance between feisty Jane and the handsome Tom Lefroy. Descriptions of nature and the disturbing prison where Georgy is held present vibrantly contrasting atmospheres. Audio captures intriguing conversations and delightful--often subtle--humor.
