The separate elements of this audio thriller sound standard-issue, but Megan Miranda grips you from the opening scene and never lets up. Hazel comes home to small-town North Carolina for her beloved father's memorial. Her brothers are both cops, as was their dad. The whole force would be at the gathering except that an old car has just surfaced in the drought-low water of the town lake. Empty, no plates. Is this something to do with Hazel's long-gone mother? Or some other submerged accident or crime? And why has the father left the family house to Hazel instead of to her older brothers? Inés del Castillo handles the text with quiet skill, never getting in the way, but masterfully building emotional tension. A terrific listen.
