McAlpine's wispy narration is a great fit for this fantasy, the first in a series. Her narration is a mix of the mysterious and the serene. The cast of characters are given distinct voices, especially Maddileh, whose strong voice reflects her determination to reach her goal. This is a satisfying start to a new series.
