In 1874 Wales, Eliza; her mother, Hannah; and her Uncle James live in Edge Hall, a manor house that has become impoverished through her father's spendthrift ways. One day, he disappears while on a business trip, and all clues point to foul play. Eliza and the charismatic new police constable, Dafydd Pritchard, seek to find out what happened to him, ultimately turning the family upside down. Cass adopts a variety of upper-class accents for Eliza and her family, which contrast with the Welsh lilt of the working-class characters, including Pritchard.
