Sophie Amoss's engaging performance enhances this young adult fantasy about a world divided between those who have the signs of magic on their palms and those who do not. The disenfranchised latter are called the Markless. When Ruti, a frank and sarcastic Markless witch, is apprehended for royal theft, she is coerced into helping the haughty Princess Dekala in her quest to rule the Somanchi realm on her own terms. The unlikely duo's fraught relationship has an undercurrent of romantic chemistry that Amoss expertly teases out. Listeners will delight in embarking on a cross-country adventure with Ruti as time is running out. Strong characterizations abound, thanks to Amoss's narration.
