Larkin's buoyant Ellie hesitantly approaches the intense Ramsey about mysterious murders that are taking place. Her criminal connections have no idea who's behind them. At the same time, Ellie and Ramsey are questioning whether their hunt for a map that would be priceless to the Germans is truly a secret. Larkin vividly renders the sights and smells of wartime England. The fear is palpable. Ellie's family of locksmiths by day and safecrackers by night adds levity to the story.
