Listeners will empathize with closeted trans teen Asher Sullivan's dismay at finding himself moved to a Catholic high school for his senior year. His only escape from the school's Women in Christ club is a circus he escapes into in his dreams, in which he feels at home for the first time. The Midnight Circus brings him new challenges when his nighttime rival, Apollo, appears in his classroom. Avi Roque confidently differentiates Asher from his friends with lilting, lighter tones for the younger characters and Asher's mother. Roque also adds a wide variety of emotions as Asher learns that the existence of the circus is limited and, in so doing, finds a place in the real world.
