George Smiley, the quiet spy with a paunch and an adulterous spouse, is voiced affably by Simon Vance. His friendly approach belies Smiley's steel trap of a mind and reluctance to resort to violence. Vance's mastery of British Isles accents, especially his upper-class inflections, also contributes to le Carré's vivid storytelling. This novel, first published in 1961, is Smiley's origin story and centers around a faux suicide, East German espionage agents, and a Secret Service that prefers to sweep things under the rug. It is the first novel by le Carré and the first of eight new George Smiley productions featuring Golden Voice Vance. R.W.S. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2024]
