Narrator Mike Chamberlain makes this true-crime story seem like a novel. Master criminal Arthur Barry came from a working-class family in 1920s Massachusetts. He recognized early that to be upwardly mobile, he needed to change his accent and behavior. Barry deftly used disguises, charm, and violence when necessary to move into upper-class circles, even hobnobbing with (and stealing from) royalty. Jobb reveals that Barry was more than just a clever thief, adeptly showing his meticulous planning for each heist. He watches the society pages, for example, for events to which people will be wearing jewels. As if Barry's exploits are not exciting enough, Chamberlain keeps the interest high with his entertaining delivery. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2024]
