Amateur sleuth Isabel Dalhousie tackles her newest challenge in this audiobook, which bridges her personal and private lives. Narrated ably by Sally Masterson, the story becomes complicated quickly when Isabel's husband, Jamie, invites Dawn, a woman involved in a scandal, to stay with them and their two boys. When strange noises come from upstairs, where Dawn is working, the intrigue builds. Meanwhile, Isabel is asked to work with a professor whose papers have dubious funding. There is an understated charm to Masterson's presentation, particularly in her portrayal of Isabel. She skillfully weaves the subplots together in a dry, understated style that complements author Alexander McCall Smith's dialogue. D.J.S. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2025]
