Whitstable is a peaceful English village in which a few residents enjoy the benefits of having a garden allotment where they grow flowers and vegetables and tend bees and hens. Jennifer Kirby portrays Pearl Nolan, who enjoys a plot, along with a close-knit group of villagers. Kirby provides the wit and spark of this sharp restaurateur and independent woman. Soon, however, the allotment holders come to believe that the town's leading councilwoman is plotting to revoke their plots. As Kirby details the resulting murder in, of all places, a composter, the blame flows in spades. Kirby's British accent differentiates the characters' tone and gender while capturing their dispositions and eccentricities with theatrics and humor. Kirby makes this whodunit as delightful as an English murder can get. B.J.P. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2024]
