Narrators are expected to distinguish between men and women--and Shayna Small does it exceptionally well. Historical fiction comes alive with this account of the life of Effa Manley, who became a Negro League team owner with her husband Abe from 1935 to 1948. Effa faced racial stereotypes, as well misogyny from entering a male domain. The audiobook is entertaining from start to finish. Small takes care with every character's words, especially Effa's clear, direct voice and her older husband's usually patient tone. Each of Effa's paramours has his own personality, and a female friend has a slight twang. This fascinating story and narration conjure people and settings from another era.
