Listeners who enjoy gothic tales will enjoy this psychological suspense, which takes place in New York's high society in 1908. In a breathy, mellow voice, Sofia Willingham portrays the young bride Millie, who comes to realize that the man of her dreams is the blackguard of her nightmares. As the story develops, a new Millie emerges, one that is determined and resilient. Accordingly, Willingham changes her tone, and her volume becomes stronger. Millie is not an endearing heroine, but listeners still won't want to see her locked away in an asylum, a very real danger. Willingham creates a variety of characters, all well differentiated, ranging from a cranky divorce court judge to a wealthy murder victim.
