Pickens expertly conveys the emotions of figures like Zdenek Koubek, a European sprinter who ultimately lived as a man, and Mark Weston, a British field athlete who also came out as a man in an era when such actions were taboo. Pickens's narration expresses sympathy for the athletes' struggles amid the intense hostility they faced.
