PERSIAN PICTURES

by | Read by Juliet Stevenson

Classics • 5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1895

Gertrude Bell recounts her 1892 tour of Persia (Iran) and Turkey. A late-Victorian floweriness and a sometimes condescending Orientalism are balanced by Bell's open mind, good nature, intelligence, and astute observations--all of which Juliet Stevenson conveys. Her narration is clear and energetic, and her voice, though somewhat nasal in her characterization of the author, is pleasant. Her precise diction and accent suit Bell's style; what's more, she inhabits Bell's persona, bringing to the text her own amiability and intelligence as she involves the listener in the story of Bell's travels and helps to keep it engaging. Stevenson makes the most of a few opportunities for drama and for voices other than Bell's with an accomplished actor's skill. Bell, via Stevenson, is an estimable traveling companion.
