Once again, longtime series narrator Kate Reading splendidly delivers the latest Lady Sherlock mystery. This time Charlotte herself is suspected of murder. Reading handles the myriad flashbacks with ease. She knows these characters well and fluidly shares moments of banter between Charlotte and her lover, Lord Ingram, as well as maintaining nail-biting excitement whenever needed. Disguises are plentiful, mistaken identity is common, and dastardly villains abound. Reading manages the mystery of the missing Mr. Underwood as deftly as Livia's despair over her lost love. The conclusion is fraught with high drama, yet Reading's overall performance is understated as she juggles the many subplots and backstories. Fans will thoroughly enjoy this mystery. For maximum enjoyment, first-timers should start at the beginning of the series. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2024]
