This rambling diatribe on the subject of slavery in our culture, past and present, sounds like a series of sermons. The language is overblown, and Spence doesn't so much develop his points as harp on them. What should an audiobook narrator do with such a pulpit-pounding polemic? Marosz has thankfully opted for a restrained, though clearly engaged, reading. But this is material that even the most sympathetic print reader would be tempted to skim from time to time. It's relentless hammering makes for tiring listening. J.N. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/MAR 00]
