Tlingit narrator Erin Tripp brings sorrowful resonance to this novel by Marcie R. Rendon, a member of White Earth Nation of Minnesota. The novel explores the individual tragedies that have given rise to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement. Quill, a long-distance runner, lives on a fictional Ojibwe reservation in northern Minnesota called Red Pine. She's training for the Boston Marathon when she hears a woman scream. This is just the first disappearance in this chilling novel. Tripp's voice is gentle. Another narrator might have leaned into Quill's anger, but Tripp evokes the fear and grief felt by Quill and the whole community. From there, she finds Quill's resolve and resilience.
