While a dark mystery propels this narrative, the novella is really a character study of five insomniac night owls brought to life by five talented vocal artists. During their customary cemetery meetup, Edie, Hannah, Theo, Tuck, and Tamar find an unusual hole in the ground, which a gravedigger has filled with mutated rats. Curious--the group uses their specialties--Edie's investigative skills, Tuck's microbiology knowledge, even Theo's bartending prowess--to uncover an unethical pharmacological plot. Despite the length of this mystery, each narrator expertly realizes their character. Jess Nahikian's sassy, sadistic Hannah stands out. Rio offers an introduction, a dark playlist, and a cocktail menu to complement the thriller. Even as the mystery wanes in the second half, this audiobook is sure to keep listeners up at night.
