Narrator Maggie Thompson immediately captures the difficult relationship that resentful Noni Reid has with her forceful mother, Dr. Radiance Castine. When her mother is appointed president of a Virginia college, she insists that Noni give up a coveted summer internship in costume design in Boston to move to Tangleroot, the plantation built by her ancestor. Thompson's use of accents and tone capture the tension of classism and prejudice in Noni's small Southern town. A shift takes place when Noni discovers an ancestral grave marker that sets her on a course to make sense of the past. Tension increases as the historical mystery unfolds and Noni increases her efforts to thwart racism, understand her place in the world, and resolve her relationship with her mother.
