Katherine Littrell narrates a mystery set on one of the Thousand Islands of the St Lawrence River in Upstate New York. After accidentally setting a house on fire, Marlowe needs to get away and accepts a summer job at a mansion where a historical mystery once took place. Littrell uses different tones to distinguish Marlowe's story in the present from that of the Ralston family in the 1930s, creating heightened tension as the two stories converge. Marlowe is a likable heroine, despite the accidental fire, and Littrell leans into her awkwardness without downplaying her intelligence. Secondary characters are easily distinguished from one another in both timelines, and Littrell handily manages the characters' range of ages.
