Rebecca Lowman superbly narrates this messy multigenerational story of ambition and intergenerational trauma. Lowman's tones of indignation and ruthlessness capture Lila, executive editor of a prestigious Washington, DC, newspaper. After enduring a brutal childhood, Lila's focus is on her career; she leaves the care of her three daughters to her supportive husband, Joe. Her youngest daughter, Grace, is the most affected by Lila's neglect. Lowman wonderfully expresses Grace's mix of determination and fragility. Interwoven throughout are the search for Lila's mother, who disappeared during Lila's childhood, as well as the journey of Grace's best friend, Ruth, a brilliant scholar. Lowman manages the large cast with ease, subtly differentiating each character, and her steady pacing keeps listeners oriented through the frequent shifts in time.
