LOVE CAN'T FEED YOU

Narrator Becca Q. Co excels in this coming-of-age story about identity, culture, and family. Seventeen-year-old Queenie moves from the Philippines to Brooklyn with her younger brother and elderly Chinese father. There they unite with her Filipino mother, who moved there five years earlier to work as a nurse. When they arrive, it's nothing like Queenie expected. The family lives in a cramped apartment, her mother is different, her father is angry, and her younger brother is struggling. Co's narration captures the conflicts and tension the family experiences. The story meanders at times; Queenie frequently can't get out of her own way, and many plot points fall flat.
