This audiobook chronicles and contrasts the presidencies of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, both born in Kentucky. The comparison ends there. Davis was a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran. Lincoln had little formal schooling and almost no military experience. Yet they faced off in the Civil War, and ultimately Lincoln's courage in issuing the Emancipation Proclamation spelled defeat for the Confederacy. Rick Adamson's narration is clear and solid. His voice and pace are generally even, but he adds elements of excitement, drama, and even incredulity where appropriate. These are especially valuable given the author's sometimes overly detailed discussions of the political machinations inside Lincoln's Cabinet. The audiobook is fact filled and illuminating, rendered easy to digest by Adamson's narration. R.C.G. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2025]
