The subject here may seem too vast and esoteric for one audiobook: the influence of classical Greek culture on the last three centuries of Western civilization. But the narrative proves so rich and enriching, and the voice of narrator Justin Avoth so fluent and adept, that this unique history soon takes hold of the listener. Arranged chronologically, with each chapter focused on a single figure or topic, the narrative achieves unexpected clarity and dramatic immediacy. Most intriguing is the chapter devoted to maligned Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton, then a significant figure. It's no matter if one loses a passage here and there to rumination or a Socratic doze. The Greek legacy is more melody than stone, and its voice here is classic in its grace, resonance, and precision. D.A.W. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2025]
