Bahni Turpin gives a winning performance of this historical novel set in the world of Black vaudeville in the early twentieth century. After Lucille's father gets involved in the aftermath of a bank robbery, Lucille and her parents leave town and start singing in churches as the "Traveling Loves." Lucille, "the little girl with the big voice," is taken under the tutelage of Marcus, an aspiring talent agent, as a solo artist. Turpin gives each character, including the lively members of Lucille's band, unique, vibrant, and emotionally resonant personas. She is equally skilled at creating male and female voices. She especially excels at portraying Lucille, whose fiery determination, fierce intellect, and abundant charm are a delight to hear. Those who enjoy inspirational stories and appreciate a lively plot will be enchanted. M.J. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2024]
