Gail Shalan's narration provides a lighthearted tone to Beth Kander's clever and insightful story, which will allow listeners to empathize with her protagonist and enjoy this take on the difficulties of grief. Eve is overwhelmed with her life, dealing with worries about potential layoffs at work; her upcoming 40th birthday, which will coincide with her younger sister's wedding; and the grief she feels at losing two beloved family members, something she can't share with her remaining family. She never imagines that her need for protection will cause her to create a golem who slowly causes problems that outweigh his good looks. Shalan's success at providing emotions and accents for the characters, including the monster, effectively brings them to life. E.J.F. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2024]
