Shaan Dasani's engaging performance captures all the tumultuous emotions Darby experiences upon returning to his Illinois hometown for the first time since he transitioned and came out. Adrift and unmoored, he discovers a portal in the bookstore he used to work at that allows him to talk to his teenage self. Dasani's voice moves between exasperation, confusion, pent-up anger, and tenderness as Darby navigates complicated relationships with his mother, his former best friend, and his younger self. The plot relies heavily on characters refusing to talk to each other, but it's nonetheless a warm and charming story about the many ways queer and trans people create homes and find belonging.
