Narrator Marisa Calin has a voice made for children's audiobooks. Full of wonder, Calin addresses listeners directly, introducing the cast, adding backstory, and warning when things might get a little dark. Clare is the undead fox that guides souls to the afterlife. Calin voices him with meticulous articulation and a disgruntled air. Clare particularly dislikes badgers, so when Gingersnipes's soul arrives, he's quick to usher her away. But Gingersnipes can't leave Deadwood Forest despite Clare's best efforts. Calin portrays Gingersnipes with a higher pitch and a slowly increasing tone of frustration as Clare makes it abundantly clear how weird and unwelcome she is. With subtle sound effects added, listeners will find themselves immersed in the eternal autumn of Deadwood. A.K.R.
