Robert Hass is an excellent poet who understands how poetry works, and this knowledge informs his narration of the poems Czeslaw Milosz wrote in the period between the end of WWII and his defection from Soviet Poland in 1951. The poems are, of course, wonderful, tracing (in part) the author's process of healing in the aftermath of the war and his growing displeasure with the government for which he was a diplomat in the U.S. As narrator, Hass, who was a friend of Milosz, brings out the beauty and elegance of these translations, which he did with linguist David Frick. Hass's voice is not as strong as it once was, but that is a small problem when listening to this marvelous audiobook. D.M.H. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2025]
