This adaptation of Tennessee Williams's classic story of romance, fate, and a conflicted mother-daughter relationship is "theater of the mind," thanks to excellent performances by Tony Award winners Anthony LaPaglia and Mercedes Ruehl. An Italian American neighborhood explodes when the police kill truck driver Rosario Delle Rose, who was smuggling. His buxom widow, Serafina, portrayed by Ruehl, miscarries and withdraws from life, expecting her teenage daughter, Rosa, played by Emily Bergl, to join her. Bergl brings compassion and fury to Rosa's character when she falls in love with a sailor. Widow Serafina resists life until one eventful day when she finally gives in to a new love, a truck driver, portrayed by LaPaglia, after she learns of Rosario's affair with another woman.
